The first poem I want to share with you is "I Ate Too Much Turkey" by Jack Prelutsky.
I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins
and much too much stuffin'
I'm probably going to die.
I piled up my plate
and I ate and I ate,
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams,
sauces, gravies and jams
that my buttons are starting to pop.
I'm full of tomatoes
and french fried potatoes,
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert,
so I guess it won't hurt,
If I eat just a little bit more!
This poem is a little bit on the sillier side, but who does this poem not describe on Thanksgiving day? I know that I always enjoy eating all the yummy food everyone has brought to the table! My favorite is the corn pudding and butter fluff rolls. What's your favorite Thanksgiving food?
Now for a poem, that is much simpler but hits right to the meaning of Thanksgiving. This is a short verse from Ralph Waldo Emmerson.
For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.

What are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving? I hope you find the time to read aloud some fun or thoughtful Thanksgiving poems this year!
Happy Reading!

My students love this poem! It gets them talking about their thanksgiving day traditions.
